13 Weird and Wonderful Loft Conversion Ideas To Inspire You

3.7/5 - (17 votes)

If you are in need of some loft conversion ideas then you’re in for a treat.

We’ve worked on hundreds over the years and know a thing or two about them.

But even we can’t hold a candle to the ones on this list.

These are without a doubt 13 of the weirdest but most beautiful loft conversions we’ve ever seen.

So we had to share them with you to provide you with plenty of loft conversion ideas and for inspiration.

And we didn’t stop there.

We’ve listed the features underneath each loft that made them so weird and wonderful SO YOU CAN COPY THEM FOR YOURSELF!

You’re going to get a tonne of loft conversion ideas from this blog post.

After this article your brain will be exploding with inspiration and you never know, your loft conversion just might make our next list!!

When Getting Loft Conversions Ideas Pay Attention To This:

But before we get to the list I need to address one question I get asked a lot:

What’s the difference between a world class loft conversion vs one that just good enough?

And I always answer it the same way.

Stanley Kubrick is generally regarded as one of the best ever film directors.

My personal favourites are The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey & A Clockwork Orange.

Now what made him better than 99% of the other directors?

Well his last movie was called Eyes Wide Shut and it starred Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman.

It’s the one with the weird masks, here’s a picture of them.

I’m not much of a fan of it if I’m honest but there’s a scene in it where Tom Cruise walks through a door.

And that’s it, no dialogue, no one else in the scene, no actual acting. He simply walks through a door.

And Stanley Kubrick took 90 takes of that scene. 90 takes of a bloke albeit Tom Cruise, walking through a door.

Now in my mind this is a tad excessive but it does illustrate the attention to detail that Kubrick gave his movies.

And in my opinion that’s why he’s regarded as one of the best ever.

The same goes for loft conversions.

The difference between good & great is the attention to detail.

So we’ve compiled a list of loft conversions that meet this criteria but with an added twist: we’ve gone for lofts that are wonderfully strange, a bit like Kubrick himself.

Here is our list and I hope you get some inspiration for converting your loft space!

1) Photographers Penthouse – NYC – Christoff Finio Architects

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

OK, so this is more of a loft-extension, I’ll admit it, but it’s still a great place to start.

This design is all about creating that outside space and framing the views back to the New York City skyline.

It’s not surprising that this appealed to the Photographer owner.

In terms of your project, think about the views you might have from up there.

Can you see towards the city skyline, perhaps some far off mountains or even the sea from the first floor windows?

The view will only be better from above!

Consider including a small roof terrace like this in your loft conversion or even just a large picture window to frame a particular view, just like a photograph. Read more…

02) Recording Studio – Jon Pritchard

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

With Declan being a former rock drummer himself, he particularly likes this one!

This design has a few features worth noting.

One is of course sound insulation.

Insulting lofts is a massive part of the design first and foremost for keeping in heat.

But in this case it’s also required for not making the neighbours go mental!

What really makes this loft so beautiful though is the wood panelling and exposed timber roof beams & posts.

The flooring is also very well crafted. Read more…

3) Games Room – CCS Architecture

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

This is one of the more simple games rooms we’ve seen but what makes this loft so special is that it’s a stainless steel roof.

And that’s made up of stainless steel purlins with insulated roof sheeting in between.

This gives scope for lots of rooflights.

Just because most of our roofs are timber doesn’t mean you have to keep it timber.

Metal roofs are more flexible and cheaper not to mention easier to handle and build.

Also, if you are going to use heavy equipment in a games room make sure the floor can handle the weight.

As loft ceiling joists are usually smaller than the floor joists below. Read more…

4) Art Studio – Attic Space Storage

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

This is another loft with beautiful wooden floors.

But if you notice what really makes this loft is the amount of light getting in.

And the walls and ceiling have been painted white to make the most of that light. Read more…

5) Shepherds Bush Loft Conversion – Studio 30 Architects

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

Back to the UK and here is another great example of bringing the outside in.

Loft conversions are at their best when they are bright and airy and provide the kind of uplifting escape from the mundane that we all crave after a hard day in the office.

This project does just that by using large, full-height sliding, stacking glazed doors to bring masses of sunlight into the roof space whilst framing dramatic views over the neighbouring park.

But that’s not the best bit.

These doors are designed to slide away and completely open the glazed wall, creating a dramatic roof-top balcony – perfect for those balmy summer nights!

This not only allows sunlight to cascade down the open staircase into the first floor below, but it also helps warm stale air from the house to escape quickly and easily. Read more..

6) Finchley Loft Conversion – Satish Jassal Architects

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

This is a really well thought out loft conversion project.

We love the simple folded steel shading device around the dormer windows and how the architect has used matching roof tiles to seamlessly integrate the new addition with the existing roof.

The stand-out feature of this design, however, is that the window that folds up and over to become a skylight, bringing both a view of the trees beyond and the sky above into the bedroom space.

In your own project, it is important to think about where the sun will be at different times of the day and how you want it to enter your roof space – you want it to be bright and airy up there, nobody wants to live in a hot box!

Consider some element of shading (eg. if the windows face south), perhaps just something simple like the photo above, to keep that really hot summer sun out.

Also do you want your loft conversion to look as though it has always been there or do you want it to stand proud as something new and modern (more on this later)? Read more..

7) Loft Extension, Merzig, Germany – FLOSUNDK ARCHITEKTUR+URBANISTIK

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

Another roof extension type project, this time built above an existing block of flats (who says this game is just for home-owners).

The interesting thing about this project is the deliberate contrast in the materials used between the existing building and the new addition.

This is a great trick, especially if you want to add something quite modern to a more traditional building – why should everything always look the same if it isnt?!

We also like how this extension appears to balance on the edge, with part of it hanging over the street below.

Think about how you might add some element of drama to your own project.

It could be something as simple as a bit of interesting geometry, a large window or even a cantilever like this one.

8) Diptych Loft – William Tozer Architects

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

I will let you make your own mind up about whether you think this one is weird or wonderful.

It is certainly one for the architectural purists among you.

We quite like the luxurious timber lining to the loft space and the way it follows the complex geometry of the roof structure behind – it certainly makes for some interesting shapes!

The best designs look simple and effortless but we all know only too well that is far from the truth.

Loft spaces can be small, and sometime awkward spaces.

It is important to keep things clean and simple and avoid unnecessary clutter if you can (think built in storage).

Also, remember that this is a room built into the roof!

It is something special and different to the other rooms in the house, and it should feel that way. Read more..

9) Climbing Loft

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

Here’s is a different way to do timber lining in your loft space.

Not content with just climbing the stairs, why not climb the walls instead?

This design has cleverly made use of the complex and awkward geometry often found in roof and attic spaces to create a series of challenging ‘rock’ walls.

You might not have the kind of height to make this worthwhile in your house, but remember loft conversions are not just for bedrooms.

There is nothing stopping you building a mini boxing gym up there, or how about an exercise bike with a big screen showing replays of the Tour de France? Read more..

10) Vienna Loft Conversion – Bernd Gruber Architects

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

In our opinion, the key to a successful loft conversion is in maximising all of the available space.

This is particularly important when you own a terraced house for example and every bit of space is precious – why waste it?!

A great way to achieve this is to get built in joinery fitted.

It doesn’t have to be expensive and this means your storage can slot neatly into those strangely shaped and awkwardly angled nooks and crannies up in your roof space.

The beautifully detailed, and cleverly designed built in joinery in this Austrian loft conversion makes sure nothing goes to waste.

We particularly like how the joinery stops short of the floor.

This is another clever design trick to increase the ‘sense of space’, making the room feel larger than it really is – just what you need in a terraced house loft conversion.

11) Hampstead Loft Conversion – Milford Martin Architects

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

This quirky design, built into the narrow roof space of 19th Century House close to Hampstead Garden suburb, has some really interesting features.

Most notable is this moving bookshelf wall which slides away to reveal a hidden, private guest bedroom beyond.

Something unexpected like this can really add excitement to a loft conversion project.

It doesn’t have to gimmicky or complex, it could be something simple like a particularly unusual vintage light fitting or a brightly coloured feature wall.

12) Attic Cinema, London – Designer Sound & Vision

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

Here we have the opposite of the basement man-cave, we have the rooftop cinema room!

What better way to get away from it all than to settle into your favourite movie.

We particularly appreciate the attention to detail with the authentic bucket cinema seating, big screen projector and even the suede on the walls for acoustic perfection.

You may have a perfectly viable loft space, left untouched because you feel you already have enough bedrooms.

Loft conversions are not as complicated as you think and they can house a multitude of functions – particularly when a little bit of peace and quiet is sorely needed. Read more..

13) Dulwich Space Shuttle

Loft Conversion Ideas From This Loft:

And finally… there can be no greater escape than to jet off into outer space in your very own space shuttle.

The loft of this £3.25m home in a leafy suburb in south London has been converted into a high-tech cockpit for aspiring astronauts of all ages.

Someone has put a serious amount of time and dedication into this and no doubt they spent many hours enjoying it.

What are your passions and interests?

This is your loft conversion in your very own house so why not inject a little of your own personality into it?

We’ve seen far too many bland and boring white boxes, it is important to surround yourself with the people and the things that you love. Read more..
