Basements offer us so much more than just a place to store your tools and last-years christmas decorations.

There are a lot of good examples out there of high-tech, super expensive home cinema spaces with all the bells and whistles.
We prefer this simple example where painted timber pallets are used to form effective and comfortable tiered seating.
Using lightweight furniture items like this also adds an element of flexibility to the space, as the seating can be easily stored away if the basement needs to perform a different function for a while.

We’ve seen table tennis, ten-pin bowling and even basketball courts in basement spaces.

All you need is a little bit of acoustic insulation above the ceiling in there and you might even get away with the odd jam-session.

It’s no coincidence that there are so many home bars in windowless basements, where you can be excused for not knowing the time of day.
This man-cave uses repurposed pub memorabilia and signage, comfy bucket chairs and even some stone cladding to reinforce the sense of familiarity.
The dark timber bar and flooring and the exposed ceiling beams are also reminiscence of a much older building, making a perfect escape from modern life… if only for a few hours.
4) Wine Cellar

Even the smallest underground spaces can be put to good use, and the consistent temperatures found in subterranean rooms make for great wine storage.
We particularly like the alternate tread stair in this one as a great way to fit a steep stair into a small space.
As essentially a windowless room, it also really pays to think about lighting when converting your basement .
Here the light washes over the exposed stone walls really nicely (this trick also works with brickwork) and the focussed spotlighting allows the owner to accentuate certain features as required.

5) Home Office

Ok this isn’t so rebellious if you actually use iit for work.
But it is if you have it beside your home bar?!
Nobody likes bringing work home with them but if you are going to work from home it is best to do it with some style.
We like how the natural light is allowed to flood into this space from above by using the staircase as a light-well.
It is important not to underestimate the amount of storage you will need when converting your basement into a Home Office (you still need somewhere to put those christmas decorations after all).
A mixture of open shelving and cupboards, as shown here, works well.
Also, think about using those spaces under the stairs or around chimney breasts to maximise your storage options.
6) Home Gym

This one is modelled on an Army assault course (Think American Ninja Warrior)! and made entirely from scrap wood and old rope. Great for men of all ages.
You really don’t need a lot of space or fancy equipment to keep fit these days, and for the price of an annual Gym membership you could kit your basement out just the way you like it (and choose your own music while you are at it!).
Make sure you get the lighting right so that you can work-out safely and consider the ventilation options if you plan on getting very sweaty down there.
7) Sauna Room

A Sauna is the ultimate in relaxation and detoxification and they can be installed surprisingly easily in any small space.
Perfect for those cold winter nights, saunas can also add value to your home whilst requiring very little up-keep.
You will need a power supply for the heater and it is probably best to water-proof the space itself before you build it (you may even have this already).
We would also recommend installing a shower nearby so that you can cool off before heading back upstairs.
8) Lego Land

This basement in an Architect’s own home has storage for over 250,000 lego blocks, all colour coded and arranged by size and shape.
It doesn’t have to be Lego obviously, basement spaces are great for hobbies and craft pursuits that you would usually have space for upstairs.
Though it looks impressive, all of the built in storage here is from Ikea and represents a really practical way (especially if you hame numerous hobbies) to keep everything tidy and organised.

9) Rustic Retreat

Believe it or not this rustic man-cave started life as dull, windowless basement.
There is even a window with a fake mountain view and all on a super-cheap budget!.
The owner used stones he found by the side of the road to build a faux fireplace and all of the furniture and wall linings have been built from reclaimed timber.

It’ amazing what you can do with a bit of astro-turf these days, and the best thing is you never have to mow it.
We’ve also seen a basement converted into a golf driving range using a video game, big screen and some well-placed netting.
Throw in the odd windmill and a sand trap or two and you could have your own crazy-golf course – the options are endless!
